There are multiple paths it could have taken, and to explain the turn of events, two theories have emerged. The trillion-dollar question is: how did it get to Wuhan? Very little is known about the beginnings of the pandemic, but everything indicates that the first outbreak of the virus appeared in Wuhan.
What really happened? At this stage it seems that nobody knows for sure. Even mentioning the suspicion that Covid-19 may have accidentally leaked from a laboratory in Wuhan was tantamount to insanity. Letters in The Lancet and Nature Medicine made lab leak theory seem to be a case of pariahs pitted against reasonable, scientific people.
